To complete this AI Overview analysis, our search experts analyzed 118M keywords from real queries actively tracked using Conductor Intelligence.

The keywords are categorized by the industry they best align with to provide additional insights. Here’s what we found.

How common are AI Overviews?

Of the 118M keywords analyzed, 8.5%just over 10M—generate AI Overviews.

Google continues to expand the number of AI Overviews on search engine results pages (SERPs). Since we began tracking AIO presence on SERPs in November 2024, the result type’s presence has grown every single month with no signs of slowing down.

The majority of the searches generating AIOs are informational, conversational, long-tail, or mixed intent. AIOs have been rolled out more prominently on smartphone devices, where a majority of people consistently search and where people usually search in a more conversational manner.

As AIO expands to even more keywords, it’s critical to monitor and track your presence within this result type to see if the keywords and topics most important to you are generating an AIO and if your brand or site is being cited as the source.

AIO device distribution: Mobile vs. desktop

Mobile (AKA smartphones) has been leading in previous months with a significantly higher percentage of AI Overviews than desktops, but that appeared to level out in April, with just over half (53%) of AIO occurrences on smartphones.

Compared to the 66% of AIO occurrences on smartphones in March, it’s clear Google scaled back AIO presence on mobile devices during the March Core update .

In previous months, Google tended to show more AI Overviews on smartphone devices because they provide a faster, more convenient way for users to easily access information directly at the top of the SERP.

Users are also more likely to be searching for informational, conversational, and long tail-keywords, or keywords with mixed intent, on their smartphone devices with the end goal of getting a quick answer to a query.

This shift to scale back AIO on mobile could indicate that Google is focused on refining AIO UX, testing engagement levels on devices, or adjusting the role of AI in mobile search. It could also suggest that Google is balancing AI-driven results with traditional search formats to maintain engagement and ad revenue. Tracking how this evolves will be crucial for understanding long-term SEO and content strategies.

The majority of AI Overviews appear in the U.S. with 89% of all AIO results coming from Google US.

Countries with the next highest number of AI Overviews present on SERPs are the U.K., Canada, Australia, and India.
